I first learned about Bearings Bike Works a couple of years ago as we were looking to offer bikes in our stores. We wanted to not only become familiar with other shops in the area but also non-profits that we could partner with and help out once we had our shop open. They got their start in 2008 and I’m surprised that I didn’t know about their work and maybe there are others too. So I’m really pleased to share this episode with our listeners and introduce you to Becky O’Mara.
Bearings Bike Works is a full-service bike shop that serves as the main workforce training space for teens and young adults in Southwest Atlanta. It’s open to the community five days a week! Bearings believes that every kid has the potential to succeed when they’re given the right tools. The skills they acquire in life become the tools they need to take advantage of opportunities when they come their way. Bearings create hands-on learning opportunities for kids to develop skills: mechanical skills, soft skills, and character strengths through bikes.
To learn more about the work that Becky and her husband, Tim are doing, visit Bearings Bike Works. They are a non-profit and rely on donations. Donations can include bikes in disrepair that can be upcycled and kids can earn a bike through working at the shop. They also have fundraising events to support the work they’re doing. Consider donating or participating at any of their events.
Big Peach Ride + Run will be on-site at the Bearings Bike Along on April 16, 2022. It is open to the family with an option to ride, walk, or run on the Westside Beltline. Come on out and join us for a fun morning!
