The Asics GT-2000 9 is a favorite among runners wanting more stability. This series has been around for over 30 years, although the numbering of the model changed 9 years ago when it became the GT-2000. Prior to that, it was the GT-2100 series. If you overpronate or simply need a shoe with more stability the Asics GT-2000 9 just might be what you’re looking for. We have a full review from our panel of testers.

What’s New
Let’s first go over what’s changed. It’s lighter and not just on the scale. It’s noticeably lighter once you pick it up and slip it on. It’ll feel lighter while you run too. The new one-piece mesh upper helps with reducing weight as does having no seams or stitching. The upper was also redesigned to improve the fit for a more snug and secure fit across the midfoot.
What Remains Unchanged
The FlyteFoam midsole carries over from the previous version providing a lightweight cushion that also feels responsive. Asics Gel technology is utilized in the forefoot (hidden) and heel to reduce the force of impact when contacting the ground. The dual-density midsole known as DuoMax provides stability and enhanced support, especially if you’re an overpronator. For further structural integrity and support the Guidance Strusstic System is visible and creates stiffness in the midfoot to help with gait efficiency. For fans of the previous version, you should feel very comfortable in continuing with this model as what has made this a favorite goes largely unchanged.
Testing The Asics GT-2000 9
We had 3 of our team members test out this model. Two of them run in stability shoes while one typically runs in a neutral trainer. Overall, everyone had favorable things to say about the Asics GT-2000 9 after running in them for a couple of weeks. Samantha from our Alpharetta location noticed the light weight and cushioning immediately. Kirk from our Decatur store had this to say, “this new 2000 also follows with other Asics updates and has a softer ride, which for me is a big plus.” From our Suwanee location, Austin said “…full-length Flytefoam midsole, makes for a soft package that doesn’t feel overly bulky.”
Fit
Our testers had feet that ranged from narrow to slightly wide and despite the range, the fit wasn’t an issue once the lacing was adjusted.
Samantha: “I’m in between a wide and standard width, so my first run, my toes did start to numb up, however, I played with lacing for my following runs and had no other issues.”
Austin: “With narrow feet, I needed to cinch the laces a few times to lock the midfoot down, but after doing so, my feet felt secure every run.”
Kirk: “The new lighter mesh is contoured and reinforced to create a classically good fit: comfortably snug in the heel and mid-foot with plenty of toe room in the forefoot.”
Feel
I guess it’s a preconceived notion that stability shoes are stiff and don’t provide a soft feel. However, all of our testers commented favorably on the cushioning of the Asics GT-2000 9.
Samantha: “The first thing I noticed was how light these were. They’re also noticeably more cushioned.”
Austin: “Honestly, I thought the GT2K would feel stiff, but the softness is evident everywhere.”
Kirk: “My opinion is the softer ride and improved fit will make this a leading option for moderate over-pronators.”
Ride
While the Asics GT-2000 9 is a stability shoe for those that moderately overpronate, it never got in the way of enjoying the run and that’s the whole point. You want to forget about the shoes, focus on the run, and just have fun while doing so.
Samantha: “The stability is great. I really am thrilled with these shoes!”
Austin: “Whether you’re a heel striker or forefoot striker, the GT2K delivers ample cushioning from back to front.”
Kirk: “While I do notice the dual-density midsole, it does not have any perceptible effect on the softness of the ride and the shoe compares very favorably to the ride of the neutral Cumulus.”
