Pun With Running
We’re halfway through the first month of the new decade…how are those resolutions coming along? Are you on track, or has the train already derailed? Let’s get off our cabooses and steam ahead. (UGH! We locked Peachy in the punitentiary for that.)
One of the best ways to keep up with the plan is to sign up for a 5K, 10K or longer, and bring a friend who hasn't done one before. In addition to the races noted on the right with ongoing in-store registration, we’ve got some new ideas to add to the list:
We start with the Resolution Race 5K/10K, taking place on Sunday Feb. 21, 8:00am in Canton at Anytime Fitness. The 10K can be used as your 2010 AJC Peachtree Road Race qualifier. Cool thing about this race is that it is the first in a series of 4 unique and different events, with one each season. Sign up for all 4 and save $20! Spring into action, and don’t fall down on the job. Proceeds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
On Feb. 27th at 8:00am, the City if Smyrna is hosting the Run Thru The Forest 5K, starting and finishing at Brinkley Park. All proceeds from this race will benefit Georgia Transplant Foundation and Cobb County residents facing expenses associated with an organ transplant. The money raised will be used for anti-rejection medication; medical expenses and other necessities following transplant surgery. Show you have heart and put some lung power into this one!
Also new on our list is Merrick’s Walk on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 1:00pm. Presented by EDIN, the Eating Disorders Information Network, Merrick’s Walk celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. This is a 2.7 mile walk around the path at Chastain Park, and started in memory of Merrick Ryan, a 19 year old who died from complications of anorexia. No puns here, just a great reason to lace up your shoes and perambulate.

While we’ve taken a brief serious tone, ever wonder what happens to those used running shoes you leave with us? Our 5 year old Reuse Your Shoes program has evolved to our new initiative we’re calling Big Peach Outreach, or BPO. The first task was to send several big boxes of your donated shoes to Haiti, with more to follow. As BPO grows, we will keep you informed of what we’re doing. In the meantime, please don’t toss those 400 mile running shoes in the landfill. Leave them with us, and they will get re-purposed in the best way possible.

Training for a spring half or full marathon such as ING? Thinking about it? No desire to go longer than a 10K but want to have some fun? No matter how you answer our questions plan on joining us at BPRC Atlanta on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 8:00am. The morning begins with Leah Thomas, registered and licensed dietitian with a specialty certification in Sports Nutrition, and Director Of Total Person Support Services at GA Tech. She will provide food for thought on this weighty topic. Mizuno USA will be on hand with their Inspire To Run vehicle, and offer the chance to go for a run in their shoes while the ING pace team leads the way. There will also be a chance to win a free entry to the ING Georgia Full or Half Marathon, and we offer a discount if you sign up in store saving you $5.00 off the half, and $10.00 off the full. Finally, Mizuno USA is catering the event, with no guarantee that Leah Thomas will approve of the food choices. Should be a tasty way to start the day!

Pun walks into a bar. Bartender says, “Call us cold, but we don’t serve your kind here.” Pun says, “Oh yeah, I can make your antifreeze by stealing her blanket!” (Yup, Peachy escaped and headed for new shoes at the Cobbler!)
May your Best Miles Be Those Covered On Foot!
