ING GA Marathon - Let’s Get It Started!

As usual, we have a lot to talk about this week, so read on to learn more about the following:

1) Post-race wrap up for the Fall Five Miler
2) 2009 ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon
3) BPRC/Subaru Trail Running Series
4) In-store race registration info

1) Congratulations to all the finishers of our Inaugural Fall Five Miler! What a fantastic way to spend a cool autumn morning! Thank you to the 823 registered runners, walkers, wheel chair athletes and canine athletes who made our event a huge success! With your help and that of our sponsors, we were able to present a donation of $13,000 to the Georgia chapter of the MDA, and $1,500 to the Chattahoochee Nature Center.

We had some fast runners out there, with the overall male finisher, 29 year old Ryan Woods of Boone, NC coming in at a blazing 25:49! Close at his heels was our overall female finisher, 30 year old Janet Cherobon of Lawrenceville, GA with an impressive 26:52! In fact, 6 out of our top 10 finishers were female. Way to go, ladies!! We surveyed the crowd after the race and found many people boasting a personal best at the five mile distance. Check out all the results on Active.com. To view race photos, and download them free of charge, please visit our friends at True Speed Photo.com.

2) With a nice five mile warm up successfully completed, it’s now time to start planning for the 2009 ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon taking place on March 29th. With a generous 7 hour time limit for both the half and the full, this race is runner and walker friendly. No wonder this 3 year old event has become a True Southern Tradition!

Need some help getting motivated to attempt your first half or full marathon? Or perhaps you’ve done quite a few long distance events and are struggling to motivate yourself to start training again. Fear not, Big Peach Running Co. is here to help with the return of our Registration To Race Day series!

Let’s Get It Started on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 8:00am at BPRC Decatur. We are honored to have two incredible speakers on board to help get you ready for race day. First up is Doc Eaton of Eaton Chiropractic in Kennesaw. Now approaching 65 years young, Doc decided to practice what he preaches to his patients, and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Wanting to keep up with his grandkids, and set a good example at his office, Doc started walking and eating right, resulting in a 60 pound weight loss to date.

Some may consider Doc a late bloomer, as he didn’t start Chiropractic school until he was 42. He went on to teach at Life Chiropractic for 8 years, and now is in private practice with his daughter Cris. Doc is so well respected, that he was recently awarded the honor of being named Chiropractor Of The Year by the Georgia Council of Chriopractic.

Wondering who is tough enough to follow that impressive opening act? How about none other than Meteorologist Laura Huckabee of CBS 46!

An enthusiastic, and avid runner, Laura does several marathons a year, including one in a foreign country. She just completed the Montreal Marathon in an impressive 4:09:27, and ran in Scotland last year. Laura even challenged herself this summer at her first triathlon. Learn what tricks this busy single mom,a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society and holder of numerous advanced degrees, uses to go the distance.

If you’re still needing more motivation, how about a chance at winning a complimentary entry to the ING Georgia Marathon? In addition, there will be a special reduced registration fee during the in-store clinic at our Decatur store. (This offer will not be available at other BPRC locations, and you must be present to take advantage of the savings,) After the clinic, we will have maps available for a group run or walk of 3 miles or more through beautiful downtown Decatur, taking you on a small portion of the full marathon course. This event is open to runners and walkers of all abilities, and is free of charge.

3) LET'S GET DIRTY!! That's right, this your chance to join the BPRC crew for the final chapter in the 2008 Subaru Trail Running Series. Specifically, on Sunday, November 2nd at 8:00 a.m., we close the series at magnificent Sweetwater Creek State Park. Whether you're intending to run or hike, we'll have everything you need, including water, energy gels and trail maps and guides. Space is limited in this (of course) free activity so sign up soon as this event always seems to fill-up! Here's everything else you need to know:

Directions
You can meet at BPRC-Atlanta at 7:15 to caravan or carpool or meet us at Sweetwater Creek State Park for an 8:00 a.m. start. If you wish to go directly to the park, please use these directions. Once inside the park, follow the main entrance road to the end of the road and the designated parking lot. You can also follow in-park signs for the museum, visitor center and trails. If you are not a Georgia Parks Pass holder, please bring $3.00 for the parking fee.

Additional Details
This is not intended to be a race. Trail runners and dayhikers of all speeds and experience levels are welcome to participate. Our primary route will consist of a 5-mile loop, with additional distance available to those who are interested. Our chosen path will be entirely off-road, with a couple of moderate (yeah, right...) climbs and some sections that are "appreciably technical." If you wish additional information, please do not hesitate to call the store. See you there!

Proceeds to benefit research for ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Speaking of in-store registration, it is now closed for the MMRF Race For Research this coming Saturday, Oct. 25 at 8:00am. On-line registration is closed as well, but you can still sign up in person race day morning. This 5K starts and finishes at Manuel’s Tavern in Virginia Highlands, and is designed to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Myeloma, an incurable but treatable form of cancer than is expected to impact over 19,000 people this year in the U.S. alone.
