Big Peach Sizzler 10K Recap!

WOW! 1303 of you signed up to run or walk the Big Peach Sizzler! 1058 braved the threatening weather and crossed the finish line! Our overall winner was Martin Hernandez of Rome, GA with a sizzling fast time of 33:00:03. Our overall female winner was Janet Cherobon, also from Rome who tore up the pavement in 34:14:08! Complete results can be found here. Some of the most amazing race photos ever can be found at TrueSpeedPhoto.com.

A huge THANK YOU to each and every person who registered for this race, and to our corporate sponsors. With your help, we were able to present a check for $3000 to Team Challenge, a half marathon training program raising funds and awareness for Crohn's and Colitis, and another $3000 check was presented to 65 Roses a marathon and half marathon training program raising funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. Did we mention THANK YOU!!!?

For those of you joining us, we did experience a few hiccups along the way, and wanted to share what happened: First up – the water stops. While we were lucky to have been spared rain, the humid air was so oppressive, that we ran out of cups as more runners grabbed for relief than usual. We sent a staff member and volunteer out to buy cups as quickly as possible to remedy the situation. Next, volunteers…over 25 didn’t make it race day. That challenged us to move people around to ensure the safety of our participants. The crew we had was incredible, adapting to whatever situation/assignment was thrown their way. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!! (As an aside, if you run several races around town, please consider volunteering for at least one every year. Whether a Big Peach race or other, these events take a great deal of work, and volunteers are an essential ingredient for success.) Finally, the shuttle bus situation. As with previous versions of this race, we arranged for shuttle buses to take finishers to the Lenox MARTA station, for a quick train ride back to Chamblee. At the very last minute, the busses were pulled to help with disaster relief in some of the areas devastated by last week’s heavy rains. These buses were donated to us to keep expenses down, and we didn’t have enough time to try and persuade another company to donate buses and drivers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Age group and team awards can be picked up at BPRC Atlanta.

We look forward to bringing you a bigger and better 2010 Sizzler!

This Week’s Races!

Keep the fun momentum flowing at the 19th Annual Framing The Future 5K this Saturday, Oct. 3 at 8:00am. Taking place at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church on Lower Roswell Rd. in Marietta, this family fun event also has a 1 Mile Habitat Bolt at 9:00am, and a Habitot Trot for the 5 and under set after that! Entire race proceeds will be used to build Mt. Bethel UMC’s 26th and 27th Habitat Homes. The course is fast and flat, and is stroller friendly. A post-race party awaits your completion of a great event. In addition, The East Cobb Lions will be collecting used eyeglasses, hearing aids, wheelchairs, artificial limbs and bicycles on race day. In-store registration continues at BPRC Decatur, Atlanta and Kennesaw through 8:00pm Wednesday, and until 8:00pm Thursday at BPRC Marietta.

Then on Sunday, Oct. 4th it’s the First Ever Locomotive Half Marathon and 5K in Kennesaw. Race founder Mark Vescio designed this race with the beginner and seasoned racer in mind. In fact, Mark is more than happy to share how he was a 300+ lb. 15 year old who made the decision to start running. He is now fit and healthy, and even has a 3:18 marathon under his belt! Check out this flat to gentle rolling course in Kennesaw. (Yes, hard to believe there’s a flat course in Kennesaw, but the elevation chart looks great!) If you haven’t yet signed up, in-store registration will continue at BPRC Decatur, Atlanta and Marietta until 8:00pm Wednesday, and until 8:00pm Friday at BPRC KSW. There is also a last chance registration opportunity on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 4-8pm at the Hilton Garden Inn Kennesaw. (Fee goes up from $40-$50 at that time and on race day.) More than just a chance for late registration, there will be the Big Peach Expo at the Hilton to help you with any last minute items, and a pre-race pasta party starting at 5:00 with delicious food and great music to get you ready for race day!

Something New & Exciting!

Southern Odyssey Relay Run Adventure! If you think the name sounds intoxicating, wait until you learn the details! Here’s the story…200 miles, 24 hours, 12 teammates, running from Athens to Roswell! You know we are all about covering your best miles on foot, what better way to do so then with 11 friends as you explore Athens, the N. Georgia Mountains, Dahlonega, Helen and Historic Roswell. Each team member will run 3 legs of the race, anywhere from over 3 miles to 8.9 tough miles. The course, still being finalized will have easy, medium, hard and very hard legs, so there’s a little something for everybody!

So you’re thinking, “When is this race so I can sign up right away?!” The answer is Oct. 8 & 9. 2010. No, that’s not a type-o, this event takes place a year from now. As you can imagine, it takes a bit of doing to prepare for such an adventure, that’s why we’ve teamed up with Southern Odyssey to get things rolling. Even if you haven’t completely nailed down the other 11 members of your team, there is a compelling reason to sign up asap: the first 50 teams to register before the end of the year will save $300 off the entry fee. That’s a huge savings! Regular price is $960 per team, so the 2009 discount takes it to $660 per team, or $55 per team member. That’s a small price to pay to essentially run 3 races, get a tech T and medal, and the chance to have a blast with your friends while enjoying beautiful North Georgia! To further motivate you, as team captain, sign up your team at any Big Peach location, and receive a $25 BPRC gift card for your efforts. (You might need some extra socks to bring to the race!)

If you’re not sure you can get 11 others to join the fun, you may have smaller teams provided you can safely complete the 200 miles in 20-36 hours. And, to help you learn more about Southern Odyssey, we will have a kick-off/info session to discuss the logistics, joys and crazies that come with a team relay. Date and location will be announced shortly.

Fall 5 Miler 3 Weeks Away!

It’s almost here…have you signed up? What are you waiting for? Last year’s inaugural run was a blast, so we’re back with AT&T The Real Yellow Pages as our presenting sponsor, we have the same fast course with only one of East Cobb’s famous hills to challenge you, and once again a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Of course with any BPRC race you can be sure there will be a great finish line festival with lots of treats and giveaways, and a beautiful long sleeve Asics Tech T to the first 650 people who sign up in person. (Great looking cotton T if you sign up on line, via US Mail, or receive #651 or higher.) We also offer the opportunity for a free race entry if you purchase $75 in Asics gear. (Registration must take place at same time as purchase.) The entry fee is currently at $25, but is going up to $30 on Oct. 7th, so come in to any BPRC location to sign up!

Zooma News!

Speaking of race fee increases, the Zooma Women’s Half Marathon and 5K is about to have one as well, so if you haven’t yet made up your mind about entering this fun event for men and women, now’s the time. The Half Marathon fee increases from $85-$95, and the 5K from $40-$50 on Oct. 9. Zooma offers a fabulous, albeit a bit challenging course starting and finishing at Atlantic Station, and touring midtown and downtown in between! Then you receive a beautiful necklace as your finisher’s medal, a New Balance tech T, and a great finish line party with lunch!

Also, just a reminder that the Zooma/New Balance Girls Night Out training runs continue at BPRC Decatur and Atlanta Thursday at 6:30pm. It's always nice to have training partners, and who knows, you may just find your perfect pacing buddy to run the race with!
